The makers behind Refinery29 have collaborated with visionaries and brands in the fields of art, activism, style, and technology to bring you 29 experiences under one roof that tap into the conversations of today and our hopes for tomorrow. Through multi-sensory installations, performances, and workshops, we present you with a new way to connect with creativity, culture, and community.
We launched the first 29Rooms in September 2015 on Refinery29’s 10-Year Anniversary as a way to bring our brand to life in the real world.Organized to disrupt the exclusivity of New York Fashion Week, we partnered with creative visionaries like Petra Collins and Solange Knowles in order to build 29 distinct artistic experiences that everyone could enjoy. The results blew us away.
Today, 29Rooms has become a vibrant community where culture, creativity and imagination are unlocked and celebrated year after year. Through our traveling tours and ever-changing spaces, new artists, partners, and visionaries continue to bring ideas to life through interactive installations, performances, workshops, and more. This first-of-its-kind event brings together a vibrant, creative crowd and engages millions globally through live experiences designed to unlock the creativity inside us all. We're excited to have the opportunity to continue to bring this meaningful space into more peoples lives through the Expand Your Reality Experience as well as events later this year in New York and Los Angeles.
Now in its fourth year, 29Rooms’ Expand Your Reality aims to unlock imagination, provoke thought, and dare people to dream bigger. Hands-on art making where guests become the artists and artists become performers, phone-free experiences that called for introspection or self-expression, and live performance challenged guests to open and engage with themselves and others. Built in collaboration with creative talent including Lena Waithe, Yara Shahidi, and Kali Uchis, emerging artists Uzumaki Cepeda and Carlota Guerrera, and fearless non-profits including GLAAD and the ACLU, Expand Your Reality ushered in the next evolution of 29rooms.
The 2017 theme, “Turn It Into Art”, was a call to action to celebrate the transformative power of creativity, building our 29 experiences to channel art’s ability to unify, heal, and uplift; to provoke new ideas and new actions. Across our 4-city tour of Turn it Into Art, we invited bold leaders and visionaries, from Planned Parenthood and the Women’s March to Janelle Monae and Alexa Meade, to shine their light and celebrate the indomitable spirit of Art.
Timed to New York Fashion Week, we took over a 70,000 square foot warehouse in Bushwick for 29Rooms in 2016. Inspired by the theme “Powered by People”, we built an experience that explored how individuals can create change both big and small, putting attendees at the center and in control of our 29 installations.
